The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem which was written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in 1797-1798. It was written in Romantic Period. Topic of the poem is experiences of a sailor. The sailor goes to sea voyage and he experiences many events in this time. Firstly, he and his sailor friends go to an area which is surrounded by ice. Because the area is ice, they can’t go to anywhere and they stay there. The while they see an Albatross, the Mariner kills the Albatross by thinking bad chances for them. But, the others think giving chances. After then, the area becomes so hot and they become thirsty. They think that all bad things happen because of Albatross dead. The Romantics

Romanticism was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement appeared in Europe towards the end of the 18th century. The  proposals and conclusions offered by writers during this extrordinary period for English literatüre were, then, symptomatic of a growing dissatisfaction with contemporary literary and social mores, and their influence has remained with us to this very day. The most significant changes took place in the field of poetry, and, whilst poets of the time have been convenintely grouped  togetheras membersof a Romantic movement. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest poem written by Coleridge. It is known as the one of the best poem of the Romanticism. The poet tells us the story of an sailor who was cursed because of killing an albatross. It can be seen the supernatural and imaginary elements in this poem. Actually I consider the new science-fiction novels and movies as the successors of the works from the Romanticism period.
A Modest Proposal

A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is a satirical essay published in 1729. Swift suggests some solutions for the economical problems, but actually he intends to criticize the society. Swift was such a reactive and clever man that he could easily notice how the Ireland's problems gradually increased. He put down his brilliant work on paper.

He criticized Ireland's problems to government by using irony in A Modest Proposal, so we can say that it is a satirical essay. According to this essay, children may be sold in order to make families' income higher and also solve the problems.
Robinson Crusoe

"My name is Oliver Queen. After five years on a hellish island, I have come home with only one goal: to save my city. But to do so, I can't be the killer I once was. To honor my friend's memory, I must be someone else. I must be... something else."
—Oliver Queen
Arrow(Season 2 intro)

Whenever I watch this Tv series, Robinson Crusoe comes my mind. Robinson was a son of a man who  was  a  wealthy  merchant  and  always expected him to  become a lawyer. Contrary to his father’s wishes he went on a slave-trading expedition to Africa. The ship was sunk and only he survived. Robinson found himself on an inhabited  island.

Like him, Oliver Queen survived from island after five years. But Robinson had survived after 27 years. It is an effective novel. I liked it first time I read.
The Eighteenth Century

18th Century was the period of Britain became powerful in world, explored and conquered the large part of India and became in colonizing.American Revolution followed by French Revolution. By the inventing of steam engines; industry, manufactoring and production incresed. Roads, railways, canals, factories were builet. These let some cities to grow. This revolution effected people more than political revolution.

English people were leader of trading and commercing in this period. So this leadership is the main reason of English Revolution. Also there were new ideas in England. These new methods decreased the costs. There were no human or animal power. Machines were doing nearly everything rapidly and cheaply.Augmentation of producing brought more need for supplies. And this situation let people to find new ways of reaching supplyies. To get supply easly, canals and railways began to be built.
The Restoration Period

The Restoration Period began after Civil War among 3 Kingdoms. It is called Restroration because the monarchy was restored. As I understood from lesson, Only %10 of population was directly involved. Although the consequences made themselves felt in all walks of life.

Oliver Cromwell was the commander of the Parliamentarian army. He captured the King. King  was beheaded. The mood of the people had already changed in favour of the King.

After Charles II died, his brother James II succeeded to the throne and tried to restore the Catholic Church and remove the laws preventingCAtholics from holding power.

METAPHYSICAL POETRY

This week our topic was metaphysical poetry.  As fas as I understood, They didn’t follow courlty love tradition. They thought love as phsical. This makes them different from others.  Whenever we read poetry about love, They always tell us platonic love, but these talked about physical.

In these, There is a philosophical relationship among the creator, created and surrounding. John Donne and George Herbert are major poets of this period. They wrote poems by unusual style. Generally, The poems rely on wit.  Language is partly simple. As an example, The Flea  by John Donne is quite different and strange poem. The poet used effectively flea to describe love. As we understand, He illustrate and develop ideas in a detailed and over complex way.

Nowadays, people begin to think love as physical. Platonical love is on decrease. When I look this situation, These poetries had addressed the right issues.
